knitting patterns for boys that don't ming

Apart for a book by Martin Storey (Jaeger) which has some really good patterns for boys, I can't find any that are not really ugly, and my boy has now outgrown those patterns which are up to age 5. Can anyone recommend any knitting patterns or pattern books with patterns for boys aged 5-6 that have a nice shape and are not what your gran might knit for your son please?

I don't mean boys that don't ming, but knitting patterns that don't ming!

someone on here who is also in teh MN group on ravelry designed a boys cardi that won a competition, the only link I have is for ravelry, are youa member?

No I'm not. I don't even know what ravelry is!

Moda 5 pattern book has patterns for boys up to 10 here

Some of the patterns are a bit but there are some nice plainer ones.

I have seen another good boys knit one but I can't think where at the moment. Let me ponder a bit and it might come to me.

Some interesting patterns on this this site Have a look through the archives as well to see if there is anything you like. Not sure how many patterns there are for older boys though to be honest as I have so far mainly knitted for dd.

If needles required for a pattern are 6 1/2- what other number needles would do?

Thank you Niecle. I'm horribly confused. The needles are old and there are millions of them.How can you tell if they are British or American sizes?

I am knitting a plain knitted pixie hood for my dd using Noro Kochoran and size 6 needles.
How many stitches would I need for a 57cm head?

Steggy from Knitty.com is great. It's a cardigan with horn-like bits on the hood and sleeves. I'm going to make it for DS at some point.

Gentleotter - unless you think they may have come from the US I would assume they are UK sizes. The UK sizes decrease in number as they increase in width/size. The US numbers more sensibly, get higher as the needles gets larger.

So if you have a fat needle with a size 2 or 1 or even 0 then you are looking at UK sizes.

Don't know the yarn you are using personally but on the label it will tell you how many stitches there are per 10cms. You can work out how many you need from that (i.e. look at however many stitches to 10cm multiplied by 5.7). This assumes you have the same tension the label is using.

Does that make sense?

GentleOtte, try one of those plastic sheets with holes cut out at needle sizes. You push a needle into a hole and, if it fits snugly, the number next to the hole is the size of your needle. If not, try again. I inherited loads of old needles from my DH's nan and it's been very useful for working out which of those are which sizes.
