Decal paper on ceramics

Has anyone used decal paper to put a design on ceramics?

I have seen a video demo at www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk but wondered if it is really as easy as they make it look and will it stay stuck on?

I want to personalize some egg cups for Christmas stocking fillers but am not really artistic so I thought some sort of transfer approach would be the best way forward.

If anyone has an easier suggestion for doing this (cheaply) that would also be welcome.

Also does anyone know if this is the sort of thing you can buy in ordinary craft shops rather than specialist suppliers? i really only want one sheet and would rather not have to pay post and packaging

why not use porcelain paint pens which can be heat treated in the oven making them permanent.

I don't know what decal paper is but have you considered decoupage? You can print any image you like off your computer onto normal paper or get images out of magazines (the thinner the paper the better). Pva them onto the object of choice and varnish over. I use Ronseal quick drying varnish www.ronseal.co.uk/products/product.jsp?id=40 , several coats are needed to make the edges of the paper less visible and so that it appears painted on. Sand inbetween every 5 coats or so. It can be quite a long process but if you have lots of items on the go at once it's not so innconveinient having to wait for coats to dry!

kcartyparty: I shy away from the painting approach as I am not in the least bit artistic.

Struths: I never thought of that. Does the Ronseal varnish make it waterproof? I.e. if this was on an egg cup, say, would you still be able to wash it?
