Can fabric be "waterproofed"?

Hi there
Just wondering whether there's anything that can be painted onto "normal" cotton fabric, to make it water resistant. I'm thinking of making a washbag/toiletries bag type of thing...Thanks!

There used to be an aerosol spray called 'Scotchguard' that could be applied to make things water resistant.

Have memories of drenching jeans with it prior to going snow skiing for the first time when I didn't have proper ski trousers.

No idea if it still exists, or if it would suit your needs.
