My sewing machine is very very noisy

It's new - a Janome 7025 that I bought in John Lewis about 4 months ago. I've used it a fair amount, never done any maintenance of any sort and it makes a huge racket when I sew. Always has done. I assumed it was normal until I went to a friend's house yesterday and saw her using her one which was almost entirely silent. It was a computerised John Lewis model (but made by Janome, I think).

What do you reckon? Should I haul it back to John Lewis to be checked out, or is it normal? If it is a problem, I'd like to fix it because I can't use it when dh is trying to watch tv in the evening because he can't hear anything over the noise.

Have you checked the foot pedal?

There is a small switch on the foot pedal which is easy to kick by mistake and when you do the machine makes a terrible chugging noise. The facility is there to put the machine on autmatic "go-slow" for beginners, or when you are doing a tricky bit and don't want the machine to run away with itself as it were.

This happened to me and I took my machine back to the shop only for the assistant to flick the switch (which I hadn't even noticed ) from then on the machine ran quietly.

I BET it's the same thing on yours! Go on, try it & let me know

I'd never noticed that before either! (Also answers my other question, which was "why did hers have a variable speed option and mine doesn't? ). It does make a big difference to the noise. It's still not as quiet as hers, though, but certainly more manageable. Thank you!!!

Sewing machines can be surprisingly noisy, my DH has to turn up the vol on the TV when I am sewing, then I complain that it's too loud during pauses , this is a conversation that has been repeated many times in our house!

Computerised models are quieter I believe but then, those prices, eek....

Have you cleaned it? Take the bobbin out and clean under the needle plate with a soft paint brush. That should help, the 7025 is noisier than the more expensive computorised models. If its still making a noise take back to JL, if you can get to JL Oxford Street Janome have reps there who can help - but do phone and book an appointment. Hope that helps

Mine sounds like a road drill at times but sews perfectly. It may be due a clean...but not just yet!!!

Have you tried changing the surface you sit in on? Try a yoga mat or towel on the table.

I'm sure you have but is your tension ok?

I got a new machine and increased the front tension but left the back. Was shaky and noisy.

My mum tightened the back tension and lowered the front so it was still balanced if you see what I mean. It now purrs like a kitten.

Obviously I curse and swear and slam things about, but my machine behaves.

Very good point, Waddle, my old machine came with a rubber mat. Maybe OP has it on a hard wooden table. like me

I had the same problem with mine so I'd second the pedal switch check. Also, consider changing your needle as maybe if it's a bit blunt it will be 'punching' through the fabric instead of gliding through.

Ok. Unplug, open bobbin case, clean out all the lint. Check your manual, oil the bits that need oiling.
'Floss' your tension disk (downward only!) with a clean scrap of fabric. New needle, rethread, check the bobbin case is in right. Check the foot pedal, check all your tensions.

If it's still misbehaving take it back to jl

Do all the cleaning things which have been suggested; if it's making a good stitch, and not distorting the fabric or anything, and it doesn't sound like there's anything grating or scraping when it works, then it could just be that it's a noisy machine. In which case you can stand it on a few layers of something softer to deaden the noise. I use that spongy draw-liner you can get which is a bit grippy (sorry, that's a useless description).
