Does anyone make their own school summer dresses?

I am in the middle of a mad summer dress sewing time for my 2 girls. My 4 year old is in reception and I have just been looking at summer dresses for her and thought - I can make nicer ones than that! I checked with the school and as long as they are red and white there are no other restrictions on style etc. My husband thinks it would be a waste of time as they are so cheap in the shops anyway - I'd really be doing it as a hobby thing for me.

Does anyone else make their own - or is it really better just to buy them?

Opinions welcome!

DS not old enough yet for that but I make about 50% of his clothes so far and all his reusable nappies. I quite enjoy sewing and when young with no money sewed absolutely everything myself.

i think if you want to you should have a go. How much does your DH spend on his 'hobbies'?

I do think home made things are so much nicer. i think you should have a go. you never know you might set some new trends at your school.

I do remember when i was a child (many years ago) all the mothers got together once a month and sewed school uniforms. they made a great social occasion of it and beginers got some really good help.
