I shall be in Manchester next week for a few day and would like to do some fabric shopping as I know its going to be better 'up north' were people do normal things like sew for their families.

Ideally i like cheapy cplace that sell remnents etc.

any one got any shops I should not miss?

of course i have no where to put anything when i get home, but still do not want to miss out.

Hiya, I am in the northwest and really struggle with fabric shops! I do go to Abakhan Fabrics in Preston though and I know they have a shop in Manchester somewhere. Their website is www.abakhan.co.uk
I'd be glad to know if there are any others nearby that might be worth a visit.
Hope this helps.

manchester is a pretty mahoosive place...can you tell us where abouts in manchester you will be?(ish)

Abakhans have a shop on Lever St in the city centre. There is another place called Leon's on Barlow-Moor Rd in Chorlton-cum-Hardy. Despite living in and around Manchester for the last 13 years these are the only two places I have found!

If anyone has any other places they know of I'd like to hear too...

i am prepared to travel for the right shop!! even up to an hour if needs be.

I was thinking of visiting Abakhan as I think they are also in Brumland and were quite good.

also found the following
LEON'S FABRIC SUPERSTORE
Tel: 0161 8817960| 419, Barlow Moor Rd, Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire M21 8ER

  • Huge Range Of Fabrics
  • Lycras, Crepes, Silks & Satins
  • Fashion & Dance Fabrics
  • Bridal Fabrics

I did remember seeing something outside of Manchester in a sewing magazine that said it was good once with huge discounts

Not exactly quirky and independent, but John Lewis have a good haberdashery section! Cheadle.

Leon's is mahoosive and has an enormous selection of fabrics. Try and go on a weekday in the morning, it gets very busy on a Saturday and in the week day afternoons (full of fashion students blagging samples). Has something of everything and if you dig deep it has some real gems such as the woolen fabrics (sourced from the few mills that still manufacture it) and raw silks along with Liberty print cottons.

If you wanted something a bit more special then John Lewis in Cheadle is good (Amy Bulter, Cath Kidston plus things like plain fine silk) but has a much smaller selection. Great haberdashery selection there too.
