I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I couldn't find anywhere else that looked suitable - please help or point me in the right direction!

My old faithful digital camera broke It is really broken and anyway it's about five years old now so probably not worth repairing. I would like to replace it with a digital SLR - it has to be one with pretty good macro capabilities, and I would like it to be good with low light pictures without having to put the flash on.

I'm not sure where to start really as there are so many on offer and I don't want to make an expensive mistake. Can anyone recommend a good, relatively affordable one? Or tell me about ones to avoid? Or even just tell me what sorts of things I should be looking for?

That will be the way I go.

MilaMae, i think those are all good. i have the D60 and i'm really really happy with it. i bought a nikor vr 18-200mm lens and i'm very happy with that too. good zoom lens and very little distortion. in fact, i can't see any. i love it! now looking for a macro lens.

you can get cheaper sigma lenses, but they don't have vr technology and might not be compatible with all features of your camera.

ultimately, i think you should look at the specs of each camera and decide what is important to you. then go to jessops or similar and actually hold them. weight is a big part of it. was difference for me between the D80 and the D60. the D80 was waaaay too heavy.

good luck! it's a fun process. i took years dreaming about it. i absolutely love photography now, and take it everywhere with me.
