Help!!! Need simple ideas for girl and boy easter bonnets

I have to help the DC make two easter bonnets for wednesday. Having done this for the past three years now, I'm feeling burnt out and have searched the net and found only the bonnets I have already made. Can anyone help me please?

Depends if you are really competitive or just want to produce "something" I have boys and in the past we have made a giant Hot Cross Bun, made from scrunched up newspaper and painted brown, white cross and black dots. Attach to the head with wide (non girly obv) ribbon.

Bunny rabbit ears are another idea. Cardboard band around the head with cardboard ears attached. Stick on cotton wool to make fluffy.

Do you have 2 balloons, brown paint, white and yellow paper/yellow pencil and the capacity to eat lots of cadbury creme eggs? If so all will be revealed.

If not move on...

I'm not bothered about winning. DS2 would love to. Made the bunny ears on a headband last year.

Like the hot cross bun idea, What do you use as a base?

May do a straw hat job for DD. I think ELC may have a version of that?

This is too hardwork. Thanks all

Don't remember using a base, just kind of scrunched up enough newspaper to make vaguely the right shape and then wrapped it in another layer like a parcel to hold it all together and give a smooth surface to paint. Best part was, after making the shape, Ds1 did actually do most of the work himself - (was a very fruitful hot cross bun) Didn't win and not sure it actually stayed on his head that well, but he was happy.

Thanks sameagain, will get DS onto it.

i did a straw hat one for dd, stuck some raffia round the rim, then i used a load of old eggshells, stuck them on open end up, glued in each, different sized pom poms (bought ones from a craft shop), and googley eyes.

shivermekinders · 30/03/2009 21:53

i made one last year as a nest with an egg inside with the chick hatching out, but feet first so you just saw little orange legs sticking out of the top. it got a few chuckles.

MorocconOil · 30/03/2009 22:09

Lucykate, I like the sound of yours. We will have to get eating lots of eggs, so we have some empty shells.

Shiver, what did you make the nest out of?

I made the nest by taking apart a wicker basket. i have uploaded a picture of it to my gallery if you want to see it.

balismum · 31/03/2009 09:08

oh shiver that is amazing am now embarrassed at what i am sending dd into nursery with today!

brimfull · 31/03/2009 09:10

god mine was shit last yr
stuck a load of easter crap to ds's baseball cap
he loathes doing the easter bonnet parade

MorocconOil · 31/03/2009 09:24

Shiver- that's a very professional and tasteful looking bonnet. Hope DD won.

no she didnt, she was sent on an errand and missed the judging.

MorocconOil · 31/03/2009 11:46

That's disgraceful. Could you use again this year?

Just got the stuff together to make a hot cross bun hat for DS2. Hope it works.

Still unsure about DD'S. Would love one like shivers, but think I will run out of time.
