My DD has to make an Easter Bonnett out of a paper plate for school - any ideas. Do I use one of those flat paper plates and what can we put on it to make it decorative. I am not very good at arts and crafts so your expertise would be most welcome.

Hi, puncture a hole in each side to thread elastic through to hold in onto her head, and on top of the plate glue on some shredded brown tissue paper to look like a nest, then glue on some of those little chicks you can get, am sure others will be along soon to give you more tips.

Anyone out there today with any more ideas.

This website here has an interesting method of cutting slits in the paper plate to have it push down over the child's head. You tie with ribbon and decorate how you like.

We cheated and bought a kit from ELC. It included the card cutouts for the bonnet itself:

  • circle for base that goes on head (cut circle out of middle fo rhead to fit into
  • circle for top of hat
  • one long strip of card toom make sides of hat

If you leave tabs on the bits it makes it easier to stick all together.

Then add your decoarations. Think ouras is on my profile photos - we made it a couple of years ago now. Was Easter Gardens for school today.

Everything everyone has just said: plus you can paint the paper plate bright yellow or bright green (then you don't have to be quite so labour-intensive with the decorating!)

Then just cut up circles of brightly coloured tissue paper and pinch them in the middle to form a flower and stick on.

You could also cut little chick or egg shapes out of yellow or orange card and stick on too ....

The scrunched up tissue paper idea is good. We used to use paper doilies as well - about the only thing they're good for IMHO!

paper muffin cases are good too

you can colour them with felt tips (draw yellow or orange flower centres on each) and use the small ones inside the big ones or each size independently ...

good luck!

Thank you everyone. We did go into the link that you gave us LaundryFairy and had a go at it. My DD was delighted and my husband was shocked when he came home and saw what we had made. He couldn't believe that we had made the flowers. I am so pleased with myself - considering I don't have a clue normally and always feel terrible that my child ends up with the rubbish looking thing as everyone elses mums are so gifted. Thank you once again.
