If I were to get a cheap sewing machine...

Sorry. I'm sure you've had this question all the time, but I'd like to get a basic/serviceable sewing machine - ideally mail order (as there's no suitable independents/second-hand places near me, not easy for me to get to a John Lewis etc)

I've not done any of this for years and have made do with needle/thread up until now

What I need it for:
-Basic hemming - curtains / alterations
-A urge for craftiness (but know myself sufficiently well that this could be a short-lived whim)

Don't need fancy features/100s of stitches etc. Remember experience with my mum's over-elaborate machine.

One that's not annoying to use, easy to get accessories for and IMPORTANTLY - neat/small/lightweight enough to put away out of sight (rather space-limited where we are).

Certainly don't want to spend over £50 at this stage, but might upgrade in a couple of years if I find I'm using it a lot.

Fear that those cheapy/handheld/cordless things might be too flimsy, but open to be educated. Also a bit dubious about ebay electrics in general

Sorry for going on a bit, but just wanted to give a decent picture of what I was looking for...

Get to Tesco. I got a perfectly decent one there 2 weeks ago for 28 quid
