Hello I want to paing a wooden toybox a creamy colour ... only problem is that the wood is fairly highly varnished. Any recommendations for an undercoat which would enable me to paint it with eggshell on top? Or any other recommendations? Thank you !!

You will need to sand the toybox down before you proceed. I don't think there's anyway round having to do this. then undercoat, lightly sand and topcoat.

You can probably get away with sanding it roughly with a very low grade sandpaper (like a 60 grade), then applying undercoat (you can buy undercoat which is designed to go on glossier surfaces from most diy shops), and painting ontop of this. The paint should go on ok, but might chip off easier than if you were painting on to a completely bare surface.
