I got my first set of markers just over a week ago and I am truely addicted. Still got a lot to learn as they cover so differently from my Prismacolor pencils....but I am having such learning how to use them.

Anyone else I can share my addiction with...please?

I would love to have a go but I am still a beginner with Prismacolour pencils and I have no time or money to have a go with my pencils let alone with something new.

But I would love to have a go with Copic markers I have looked at your first copic cards on your blog, they are wonderful and very bright colours.

I take it there is no blending with markers...how do you shade ? Can you use pencils on top of the markers ?

Dingle · 14/02/2009 10:27

I have not tried prismas over the copics to be honest...something I will try out though. The blending is just different with the Copics, layer, over layer, experimenting with different shades. You can used base colours such a greys under other colours to create different shades of colour and create shadow etc..

I felt quite guilty as I haven't had my Prismas THAT long....perhaps 6 months??? But I started with 12 Copics and within a few days of them arriving I had ordered another 36!

LOL, Yep thats what happens with a new hobby, you have to have the full set. I had 6 pencils with increased to 48 + 6 at christmas but there is still loads I don't have

I did wonder where the second set of markers came from, your blog implies the postie just turned out of the blue with them...yep right...accidentally buying craft stuff

How do you learn where the shadows etc should be. I am very pants at it ? Is there any tutorials you can recommend or is it a case of practising ?

LOL...I was having this discussion with my hubby the other day. I showed him my new markers...and he looked at me as if I was mad at getting so excited...a sort of "but they are felt tips!" sort of look. I then showed him my first attempts and said that the Designer of one of the Design Teams I am on had asked me to colour in her new download collection (eek talk of being thrown in at the deep end!)

I explained that I NEEDED more colours..like NOW !!! and how I was having a few problems shading with so few colours...he asked how I knew where to shade!

TBH I just go with the flow, think of colour and light, imagine the sun shining at a particular point on the image and cast the shading and shadow from that...hmmm. Does any of that waffle make any sense?

No tutorials spring to mind but if I come accross any I will let you know babies!

TBH I love looking at a few craft blogs I have bookmarked including yours. Looking at proper cards gives me loads of ideas and hints. Not that I have time to make card nor the skill to do it well. That said I do love colouring in stamps, so restfull and can be done over a nursing baby

Thanks for the hints on shadows. I only had a go at doing darker bits around the edges of images and on the creases of clothes etc. I have done lots of faces and I ask DH's opinion and I say..this one is too bland, orange, I like the cheeks on this one and the shadows on this one. He looks at me like and tells me that they all look the same !!!

I did see your coloured downloads on the Dotty site, very impressive !!!

I might see if my next local craft fair in April has any markers and see if I can splash out on 1 or 2 just for a little go.

Babies, I have a site where I got my Copics, one of the best prices I have seen and free P&P on a £10 spend...email me if you want any more info. (My email addy is on my blog)

Alternately, there is a set of Marvy Markers up for grabs on a forum challenge. Again, just email me for info if you are interested.

I do agree, colouring is very relaxing and almost therapuetic!

What colours are you using for the skin tones then?

I am using light and medium peach for main face & shadows and rose pink for cheeks and creams for highlights. Doing shadows around the hair line, under nose and on neck.

I'll email you for comp details
