Please help - what exactly is a collage?

We've got our first lot of homework from pre-school which is to make a collage in ds's favourite colour but I'm not sure that I remember what a collage really is

Is it just random things various interesting bits and bobs stuck onto the card or should it made into a picture?

I think you've got it right actually. Lots of red things stuck onto a bit of card. But I know nowt about crafts!

it can be either. but at that age, i'd suggest it's just stick some bits in her favourite colour on a bit of paper, if she wants to do a pic fine...
