Anyone made a Mei Tai? Could I?

Ok, I am a beginner sewer. But I have a sewing machine and it looks like its just sewing straps on a square?

Am I going to embarrass myself and possibly injure my baby if I try? (visions of stitching ripping in Morrisons organic health food shop)

hmmm...not made one myself, but owned one made by a friend and yes stitching has to be done well, but also the material has to be used correctly, to make it as strong as poss....iykwim....

Well my mum made one for me (apparently) and I would not rate her sewing skills very highly! So I think it might be worth having a go. I don't have a fave pattern to offer up though.

Personally I bought a Kozy Carrier which I love, but occasionally I feel like wearing a different fabric. So I'm going to make myself no-sew wrap following mamatoto's instructions, just as soon as I can get down to the Fabric Warehouse.

Umlellala, are you following a pattern? There are a few websites giving free patterns for MT which bring into consideration your safety concerns.

fwiw, they sew the straps on in a square with X's in the middle of them. They also tend to have an inner layer of heavy fabric, canvas or twill onto which this strap is also sewn into, so effectively 3 layers of fabric.

Yes, I would def have to follow a pattern... ohhh, it'll be fun to try! Thanks
