A friend of mine is having a baby and I wanted to make the baby a baby blanket or quilt; but am a novice sewer, would this be beyond me?

Can't see why. Get a bit of fleece, blanket stitch al round edge, applique name or shapes, lovely!

get the cath kidston book 'make' out of the library, she makes some gorgeous things and explains it all really well

I made two very basic pram quilts. Check out local fabric shop, what made mine look great was the gorgeous fabrics and trims.

You can start with a simple rectangle idea two layers of fabric and a layer of filling. Sew round almost all the way but leave enough of a gap to turn inside out then finish with your best neatest sewing.
