I'm a family portrait photographer and would love to talk cameras, lenses, lighting, post production, etc with others.

I think there might be one or two photographers around here... sadly I'm pretty much useless with a camera but I did marry a photographer if that counts.

Hi I'm not technically a photographer, but I'm a jewellery designer by trade, and photgraph my own jewellery, to keep costs down.

Due to this I've been reading and learning alot on the internet about photography, lighting, etc.

I've recently bought a Sony DSC-H3 camera, which I think is amazing compared to my old cheap compact digital camera.Although I haven't used it for anything other than Macro photography yet, I would love to learn more.

quickdrawmcgraw · 05/01/2009 17:03

I love macro photography. Unfortunatly my old macro lens won't fit on my new camera.
I've got a canon 5D with a couple of zoom lenses and a 50mm f1.4
do you have one of these moonmother to photograph your jewellery (which is gorgeous btw)?

Oh Moonmother, how did you train? I have wanted to do a jewellery course but am nt sure if I want to do metal work or bead, ceramic...

moonmother · 05/01/2009 19:00

quickdraw- I have my own version, that I made myself (very Blue Peter like) from a parcel box, some spare net curtain and some new lightbulbs.

Thank you for the compliments on the jewellery, from a professional photography point of view are they ok?

georgiemum I'm self taught- I split with my ex 5 years ago when my Dc's were little and needed a hobby to do when they were in bed at night. So I went to a local bead shop bought bits and a couple of magazines and sat and taught myself. The internet is great, there is loads of info and tutorials out there, free of charge for people who want to learn.

Of course there are also lots of classes and courses around, but they can be quite expensive and sadly there are none around the area where I live.

I would love to train to be a silversmith, so I can create something thats totally mine, ie I make the chain and all the silver components, rather than having to buy it in, but the nearest is London, and with running my business etc I just haven't got the time.

I studied photography untill i had ds. Now i work as a catering assistant - whats that all about!?
I have a Nikon f90x and a Nikon d70. I still love to take photos but don't so any work now! Nice to meet you :D

PortAndLemon · 05/01/2009 19:24

I do portrait photography, but not enough of it to support myself and be able to quit my other job . I use a Canon 20D with (normally) their 24-105mm 1:4 L IS USM lens.

quickdrawmcgraw · 05/01/2009 21:58

PortAndLemon- I have the same lens as you and also a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM. Not really for portraits but good for outdoor shots, like the one of ds in the woods on my profile.
I don't have to support myself with my photography but I'd love to be making more than I am now. I want to get to grips with my new camera and when I feel more confident with it I'll up my prices.

PrammieMammy nice to meet you too. Most of my photography skill is still in PP in photoshop but I'm getting better as I go along.

moonmother- I think your photographs show your work off really well!

OH just the thread!! I get to choose between 2 new cameras later in the year (ie when we have saved up) i currently have a crappy fujifilm one. and we don't get along very well

PrammieMammy · 05/01/2009 22:32

I really need to get myself on my feet again. Everyone i went to college with - that arnt still studying, all work freelance, i just feel i dont have the time to sort everything i need out.
Do you work for someone, or are you freelance? How long have you been working in the industry?

quickdrawmcgraw · 05/01/2009 22:47

I'm freelance and only been working as a photographer for 2 years. I work on my own, it would be handy sometimes to have someone to help but I wouldn't be able to pay them.
I still do illustration when jobs come up but I'm really enjoying photography as I get out to meet people.

PrammieMammy · 05/01/2009 22:54

I bet you could get a student work with you for free. I worked with a guy when i was at college, helped him out around the studio, he didnt pay me, but i got to use his studio and darkroom whenever it was free. He let me print work out too. I still use his darkroom today, and he has another student helping out. Maybe a good idea to put an add up in the local college!

brokenrecord · 05/01/2009 23:11

I am a family photographer too. I think there are a few on here - maybe do an archive search.

There are also a few photography forums around (I like the US based ones) where you can chat with people, share images and generally up your game.

Happy to chat any time

quickdrawmcgraw · 06/01/2009 09:32

brokenrecord Do you work for youself? are there any forums you know of that are specifically for family photography? I'd love to be able to share images but can't really when they're of other people's children.

Good idea about taking on a student Prammie.

OP posts:
brokenrecord · 06/01/2009 14:29

Yes I do work for myself. I am still building up my business and so I cannot say if it will make me totally self-supporting, especially in todays financial climate, but I'm reasonably optimistic.

There a lot of family and children's photographers on Flickr - including some based in Ireland. I cannot vouch for security on there, but it is possible to share images with friends and family without making them publicly accessible.

Do you have a website?

quickdrawmcgraw · 06/01/2009 15:21

I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

Lovely pictures. I've emailed you ... I think... Let me know if you don't get it.
