Any advice on crackle glazing?

I am thinking of refurbishing some brass curtain poles which have been lurking in the attic.

I was intending to paint them white (with acrylic eggshell?) and then crackle glazing them.

I've never done this before. Would this technique work over brass? Is it suited to curtain rails (would it last, or will the rings remove all the finish)?

Thoughts & experience would be gratefully received.

As long as the first layer goes on fine then the crackle should work, you would be best to give it a coat of hardwearing varnish to preserve it if the curtains will be drawn, but the rings will only really rub away the pain on the very top of the pole.
