and being totally lacking in any craft skills at all I don't know where to start. Have so far wrapped the tube up in an old sock, mixed some grey paint and am now admitting defeat. I am going out to get some petrol I don't need and hope that someone will have saved my bacon with some helpful, do-able ideas by the time I get back.... Please!!

DD and I are making a flock of sheep out of toilet rolls. For the tree that is still outside and will probably be dug up in a panic on Christmas Eve.

You could try cutting two slits in the tube and pulling out a bit of sock to fashion 'ears' and scrunch kitchen roll to stuff the face and nose of donkey. Stick two eyes on. Don't glue tumble dryer fluff on then paint it. It will look like it has the mange.Paint a white cross on it's back.

Legs- if it has to stand up then make legs out of stiff cardboard from a sturdy box. If they are hanging then use string (we used bailer twine but then we are rough) and thread four corks as feet.

Tie a string tail on and fray the end.

thank you!! sock idea is inspired and in fact we're now covering the whole thing in an old grey sock so reducing opportunities for DD to stick herself to the creation.
