what fabric for homemade aprons?

I want to make some aprons and thought cotton twill would be best but can't find any retro/vintage style patterns in that fabric. Could I just use cotton?

I would have thought this would be OK, especially if you starch it as well.

But cotton twill would probably work OK with any pattern, if you had the right sewing machine needle (it's thick when turned over for seams).

I've made aprons just in cotton but used 2 layera (front & back) so that they're reversible
