No sew snaps - do I really need a special instrument?

I have never put snaps on anything, sew or non sew but have both types and well, would rather the non sew because my hand stitching is a bit rubbish. Can I just use pliers or do i need a special whatchamacallit?

Are there any hints/tips i should know about?

the instructions should be on the packet of snaps. so many different types around these days that you do them all sorts of ways.

my favourites are the ones that cone with a small tool in the packet and you just need a hammer to go with it.

i really don't think pliers would work that well.

hmm ok. The couple of small haberdasheries that I tried just offered me sew on ones and looked at me like I was crazy when i mentioned no-sew ones. Have loads lying around as those extras you get with clothes in case their ones come off and thought I´d have a bash with them but sat staring at all the pieces and don´t know where to start.

back to the drawing board then..
