what can I do with a scratched glass coffee table?

We have a lovely whicker and glass coffee table which is part of a conservatory suite, which I'm in the the process of recovering and painting.
Unfortunately the glass table top is scratched on both sides and to replace will cost more than £130!
I am desprate for ideas on what to do with it. I have thought about glass painting or spray frosting it but I'm worried about it not being hard wearing enough and scratching off.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do?

You can buy sheets of 'etch' with different designs that stick on windows and would do for other types of glass.. They do withstand cleaning.
look here

They can cut to any shape and size. just beware though, its hard to fit the patterns if the 'holes' are too big. there is not enough plastic to keep it all together and it rips .Grrrr.

Alternatively, I think that you can get chemical etching paste and paint it on, and it ought to withstand cleaning, since it's actually removing the surface of the glass, IYSWIM. I got mine from a stained glass supply shop years ago - sorry, no link!

You could try and apply safety film to it this will give you a smooth finish on the glass. safety film link below. www.windowfilmsdirect.com/safety.html

Have you tried enquiring at a trade glaziers? If you can find one locally, there are huge savings and of course they cut to size.
