Can you help a beginner learn how to knit - suggest books, supplies, etc?

i want to start knitting but have never ever done anything like this before. can anyone recommend a good book and starter kit for me? i had been thinking i'd like to start by making a scarf or baby blanket, but maybe that's too ambitious?

any ideas on how and where to start would be appreciated!

there was a great supplement in the guardian a few weeks ago - I've saved it for the same reason!

their 3 top websites for beginners were

www.knittinghelp.com]]
www.learn2knit.co.uk]]
www.tinyurl.com/5grthc] ]

If you are anywhere near a local yarn store go and have a chat. They will help you to get started.
Also join Ravelry and check out which local groups are near you. It is much easier if someone can show you than just to learn from a book.
