What sort of paint do I need to paint a metal plate?

Preferably so that it can be eaten off (or sealed in some way and then eaten off). Is it just enamel paints, or something else?

I read somewhere that ordinary water-based ceramic paints - the type you bake for c90 mins @ 160 - work on metal (and glass, too, if it can take the heat).
