Calling all KNITTERS - does anyone know what stitch(es) this is?

My Grandma used to knit me 'raggies'. My DD has just discovered the last one that my Grandma made me and has adopted it. I'm very happy for her to have it but I know, from experience, that they disintegrate after much cuddling so I'd like to make a spare.

I don't think the stitch(es) can be that complex as I remember my Grandma teaching it to me when I was about 12. Unfortunately I now have no idea what it was - I have put a close up of the 'raggie' on my profile page - does anyone have any idea at all what stitch or combination of stitches I would need to do to make another one? Any and all suggestions very gratefully received.

it just looks a bit like garter stitch, but at a jaunty angle to me

agree with pruners - thinnish yarn on biggish needles

(is it at jaunty angle btw? what does it look like at the beginning?)

I'm not so sure. Yes the first picture looks like garter stitch, but the second one looks as if there might be a bit more to it, someting like knit one slip one, and then on the next row knit the slipped one and slip the knit one. Knit the first and the last stitch.
I've done a little trial and it still does not look like the first picture.
You will have to try a bit and see what it looks like.

I think it might be moss stitch on big needles - k 1 p1 like rib but then on the next row, k the k sttich and p the p stitch (in rib you would p the k stitich and k the p stitch).
That gives a diagonal look to the pattern.

Thanks DutchOma and thumbwitch. I think I'll give all the suggestions a go and see what comes out most similar. It doesn't have to be exactly the same but I loved my raggies so much that I'd really like to replicate them as closely as possible for my DD.

I think the 2nd pic looks like what my mum calls reverse stocking stitch. Ie the 'rough' side of stocking stitch which is just knit a row purl a row.

Thin thread on bigger needles.

Is it the same on both sides? If so - garter stitch. If not - stocking stitch.

Hmm, yes, I'd like to know what the other side looks like. The stitches look twisted to my eye, and it looks like reverse ss.

this sounds a bit silly but it looks like an old-fashioned dishcloth. maybe you could find instructions for that?

Hi Frazzled - have you managed to find something that works yet? I tried a few rows of moss stitch on 12mm needles but it was too open; was thinking about trying it on 1 12mm and 1 6mm needle but haven't got that far so thought I'd see where you had got to..

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your help. Me, Dh and the DCs have all had a horrible sinus/cold virus since I posted this so I haven't tried any of the suggestions yet .

It does look the same on bothe sides. I'm going to go out and get some bigger needles tomorrow and give the various suggestions a go.

I know I knitted a scarf once which you had to wind the wool around both needles once before you knitted the stitch. Gave a longer stitch.

I'm knitting soemthing very similar and am doing yo, ssk (ie, yarn over, slip, slip, knit) - traditionally called 'faggoting'. I think your stitch is simpler but it definitely looks like there's some yo there. It's not really anything to do with needle size, rather, creating rows of eyelets.

superjo - I think you're thinking of spider stitch - it's good for scarves because they grow quickly, but I always do 2 rows of spider alternating with two of garter to stop it stretching too much.

I think the picture does look like moss stitch on big needles - maybe it's knitted the way my mum used to do her blanket squares & dishcloths, starting ar a corner & increasing till you have a triangle half the size you want & then decreasing - she always said it kept the shape better that way.
