Ideas for a modern crochet baby blanket for a baby girl

I'm hoping someone can recommend a current or modern pattern or style idea for a crochet baby blanket.

I want to make a baby blanket for a neighbour who is having a baby girl but my dc are all 15+ so i'm not sure what the fashions in baby styles are now. The last one I made was a good 7 years ago when everything was grey and lemon and minimalist so I'm sure fashion has moved on!

I have a couple of ideas but input from any new mums or folk who've crocheted for baby girls recently would be gratefully received!

This is my go-to. I usually do similar colours if I don't know the sex, or a denim blue/dusky pink - yes it's a bit gendered. I've also done this as a Cath Kidston inspired rainbow ish one, and in green/purple/white.

A granny square is definitely a beautiful classic @CocoPlum I had considered little granny squares but I usually avoid them as I hate sewing the million ends in but hadn't thought about making a big granny square!

I really like this one as the first square is slightly bigger than a standard one. You can size it up easily too. I find the border really simple and cute but you could use any border pattern.

If I do anything bigger than a block-size Granny square, I find the corners start to bend in the direction I'm going round the square, No idea why this happens, but in case it does for anyone else, one solution is to reverse direction on alternate rows. It means alternate rows are front/back, but I guess at least it makes the blanket reversible (& who would notice anyway, particularly if they don't crochet?).

If there's a way to stop the corners bending in the first place, I'd love to hear it.

This is my current blanket. It's an Etsy pattern from CottonAndWoolCrochet and looks far more complicated than it is. It's all (UK) trebles, dc and chains and you can ring the changes with the hearts colours.

When you do the corners, do you put an extra chain in? The pattern I've linked to above does 3tc, 1ch, 3tc in each corner space and never bends!

That is a beautiful blanket! Can I ask if you have to cut the yarn for each heart or do you carry it across?

Big granny squares are my go-to for quick & easy. I sometimes ask the parents what colour they’d like but often use multicoloured yarn & make sure it can be tumble dried if necessary.

It didn’t honestly occur to me that there would be fashions in baby blankets.

TheWoollybacksWife · 31/08/2026 16:10

@PixieCrust you cut the yarn for each row of hearts but keep the background colour going (I use a stitch marker through the loop when I stop the background colour and join in the contrast). I'm currently making a single bed sized rainbow version which is eight repeats of seven contrast colours and the sewing in of loose ends is not too onerous. I try to do them after each complete rainbow.

Yes, I usually do (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) on the corner. D'you think that's the reason?

2 chains seems big, like it might go a little loose? But in all honesty I'm not good on how crochet design works 😆

This is so lovely - I’ve made a few of these - they look so different if you use different background colours and easy and fun to make!

Just saw this ad for Christmassy crafts. Spot the deliberate mistake! 😂

I don't know the pattern but we were given the most beautiful handmade crochet blanket when my daughter was born and it's like a spider webby star shape. The person made it out of multicolored wool and we loved it so much

If you have a photo of it, you could do an image search & the pattern might come up.

I wouldn’t even look at the pattern as I wouldn’t trust it.

OP, don’t worry about trends. Choose something that you will enjoy making, using practical yarns (machine-washable and non-fuzzy). Ravelry is an excellent site.

Ive done a star blanket several times with white, grey and then a colour - pink/lemon/blue/variegated colours
Also a c2c join as you go as a gingham . Again 3 colours but it looks like it is woven. So a pale colour, darker version and a white. That was nice for a winter blanket as its lovely and snuggly

Take a look on Ravelry, you can search really easily there.
Use this an an opportunity to learn a new skill: mosaic crochet?!

I wasn’t going to do a blanket this year but I think you’ve changed my mind. This is lovely

OttersOnAPlane · 02/09/2026 08:03

It's only 7 years since you made baby blankets and the crochet fashions for those classics don't change much, OP. Just pick a pattern that appeals.

For winter babies I like waffle stitch as it's so warm. Solid granny squares have impact, ripples look good, and granny squares with circles or daisies or other impactful shapes in their centres look great.

Granny stripes are quick to do and you can go as bright or as muted as you like.

I would suggest a 12 point star - Bella Coco on You Tube has a great video tutorial. Really easy but effective particularly if you use an ombré yarn so don’t have loads of ends to deal with from colour changes. Plus it’s made in the round so you don’t need to worry about running out of yarn.

Grumpynan · 02/09/2026 08:08

I tend todo a large granny square a lot, add a border to make it pretty. I find a lot of mums like a corner to corner too as this can be made into a rectangle.

as for colours, I see who I’m making it for. I have one friend who loves her babies in white an loves a white or cream blanket, though the last one I did was lemon strip though that was knitted. I did one fir my DIL’s friend who likes brighter colours.

knitted and crochet blankets are very much on trend at the moment midwife’s like them because they’re breathable.

if you fancy a long project, I did each of my grandchildren temperature blankets for the first year of their lives to go on their big beds. I also did one when my DIL told me she was expecting, calculated back to about when she conceived to the day baby born, this was cot sized, she loved it
