Banner for village carnival

I'm looking for ideas and advice about how to make a banner for our village carnival. It's to go on the toddler group's stall, and I'd like to get the kids/babies involved in making it.

I was wondering about maybe getting a large piece of material, getting the kids to decorate it with hand-prints (could I use ordinary paint for this?) then painting or sewing on the name of the group.

Would that work? I expect there are lots of you out there with better ideas. Thanks!

Maybe you could write the name of the group in footprints

That sounds quite technically challenging...

It has to be something that we can get the kids to do in toddler group, so anything where they have to be too careful might be difficult. Trying to find something that we can be a bit careless where the kids are involved, but will ultimately look ok...

Get a very cheap bed sheet and use that.
like this though I'm sure you can get value ones in store cheaper than that.

Get the children to put splodges and handprints all over it in bright colours. When it's dry paint your desired message in black letters over the top which will be clear but with a nice colourful background.

You could buy this double pack and do teh second one as a backdrop and leave lots of handprints etc on view.

The children will love getting their feet painted and walking over it too. Though cleaning up after can be more trouble than it's worth i have to say!

I've got an old sheet, I'm sure. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you - that's sort of what I had in mind. I reckon I could then sew the name of the group on in large letters of a plain fabric to make it stand out.

Any idea whether ordinary paint would work? Or do we need to invest in some fabric paint...

I suggest you use ordinary paint mixed with PVA glue to give an acyrlic effect

Thanks, wouldn't have thought of that. Am thinking I should probably experiment a bit before I try this with the kids!

Not sure how much it would cost (sorry Dh not here so can't ask) but fabric for Stage flats is good for banners too, slightly thicker than a sheet and less likely to blow around if used outside. It can be folded away and used again and again. Also spray with waterproofing stuff from an Outdoors shop eg Millets, so paint doesn't run should it rain.

Sounds like a great idea though!

Don't forget to post the finished result. I'm looking forward to seeing it!
