Name to honor Donald

Grandpa Donald is a beloved family member we would like to honor.

For obvious reasons we will not be using the name itself.

Are there other names that work in its place as an honorific?

I can only think of Donovan.

Donal?

Donny?

Use it! Reclaim it! The orange one won’t be around forever, and it’s objectively a solid name. (My grandfather was a Donald too)

But you should get this moved out of Arts and Crafts. People will think you’re naming a knitted soft toy.

Use it as a middle name? It’s very common to use middle names to honour family members so I don’t think anybody is going to think it’s anything to do with Trump, they’ll assume family name.

Or use Donald as a first name but use the name Donnie day to day. Trump is mostly referred to as ‘Trump’ or ‘Donald Trump,’ I wouldn’t associated the name Donnie with him.

Alternatively if you really don’t want to use it and are not keen on any of the Don names suggested maybe another -name.

Maybe follow the British schoolboy tradition of a nickname that traces back through various layers of logic to reach what's intended, e.g. Fartface = Trump (= fart in English slang) = Donald Trump = Donald.

Your link doesn’t work. But ‘Donovan’ doesn’t have any link whatsoever to Donald. The ‘Don’ syllable isn’t even pronounced ‘Don’ but ‘Dun’.
