I made a quilt for my DB's birthday present

I have been asking intermittently if he would like a quilt and he kept putting me off until he was into his new home (so long, so, so, so long involving an awkward planning issue that got resolved just as Covid hit and stopped everything, then a long rebuild because of the awkward planning issue). So he's been in for about 18 months and I remembered to ask again and, this time, he said yes.

I think it came out well, I already had the fabric which was a fat quarter bundle called Tango by Kate Spain and it went well with his curtains.

It's really lovely! I do like a quilt, especially in the winter.

Weirdly, I love making them but don't really like sleeping under them. I don't like heavy bedding and I get too hot so I have a very lightweight duvet. I made one for my friend for her 60th birthday and she says she sleeps like a log under it, I only gave it to her in the autumn so she hasn't had a summer with it yet so we'll see how that goes for her. (Photo of friend's quilt, it's massive and weighs a ton).

This is absolutely stunning OP. What an amazing gift. I’d be thrilled to bits to get that 🤩

I love your quilts! Your lines and colours are fabulous. I have lots of quilts but I do love sleeping under them.

drspouse · 08/03/2026 19:01

Gorgeous! We use our quilts on the sofa - and DD has one that is supposed to be decorative on her bed (but it seems to spend all its time in her drawer).

Mauro711 · 08/03/2026 19:21

Oh now I want to make a patchwork quilt. Haven’t made one since school. Yours are beautiful.

JohnnyBraggtheyretalkingaboutmeNsoul · 08/03/2026 19:26

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/03/2026 19:31

Looks like hard work but what a result - well done 👍👍

waltzingparrot · 08/03/2026 20:08

Ah....made with love. Lucky DB.

pouletvous · 09/03/2026 18:57

Wow, stunning! Do you have an Etsy page?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/03/2026 20:02

What would I use Etsy for? I didn't create the pattern so there's nothing of mine to sell.

what would you use it for? For selling your quilts .

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/03/2026 20:47

No, for so many reasons. Partly because nobody would pay what they are worth (fabric - €100, wadding - €52, backing fabric - €55, long arm quilter - €90) so this particular quilt was just under €300 before my time making it. I actually don't know how long I spent making this quilt, but at a wild guess let's say I spent 30 hours. I wouldn't expect to make as much per hour as I used to as a data analyst because the skill level and scarcity is different, but I pay my cleaner €25 per hour so I'll take that as an equivalent skill level to making a quilt. So I would pay myself €750. So, over €1000 in total for that quilt.

But mostly I would never consider making for sale because I don't think things that you do for pleasure should be monetised, because it stops being a pleasure pretty quickly.

People have asked me to make a quilt for them, but I generally offer to give them details of classes or YouTube videos so they can make their own. I have only once said yes to someone asking me to make her a quilt and that was because I knew I would enjoy the design process with her and because I was bored during lockdown. It turned out brilliantly and pushed me well outside of my usual comfort zone which was fun.
