and can you recommend a good site if so?

Yes I would but I haven't. Do you know what you want already? If not could you go to a show and try a few? For my most recent sewing machine I went to the knitting and stitching show at Ally Pally and spent a whole afternoon looking at different machines and then ordered one there (a Janome).

yes, i do know what i want, and i think the idea of buying at a show is a very good one. but i need the machine before the next show!

In that case if you're a bit nervous about buying online then John Lewis or perhaps Tesco/Argos would be a safe place to buy from (if they stock what you want). Otherwise the manufacturer website might either sell directly or have recommended online retailers.

I have a feeling that someone on here bought online from a company called something like Sewing Machines Direct, but I can't find the thread now so I can'g find a link to the website.

What do you think you will buy? (I'm in the mood for a little craft related window shopping. )

don't think john lewis or tesco sell that machine. i think i'll have to buy it from a specialist shop.

Yes, drool at the machine, but at the price.

yes, price shocking. but i've justified it by making curtains for our house (the ENTIRE house!) and figure it'll pay for itself out of the cost saving. well, that's what i'm telling myself.
