Just sharing this in case anyone else might be interested! Aldi are selling various wool in their middle aisle, I popped in for bread and milk today and came out with this lot… 9 x 100g balls of lovely chunky soft mustard yarn that is a jumper or cardigan but doesn’t know it yet! Only £11!!

I'm maybe getting ahead of myself seeing as I’m a total beginner but I’m really loving learning knitting! So far I’ve knitted a scarf, hat and I’m now halfway through a Sophie Shawl.

If anyone has any beginner friendly jumper or cardigan patterns please let me know! 🧶

Hello again 😊 Thanks for this! I'll be heading over tomorrow to stock up. Need to get started on a proper project so this will be perfect!

HarryVanderspeigle · 13/02/2026 21:42

I've been cross stitching again recently. Crochet is surely next!

Rainbowsayhi · 13/02/2026 21:54

Thanks for sharing. I need to stock up too! I'm learning crochet and knitting.

I hope we can share what we have made one day.

Is it wool though or superwash or acrylic?

ScarletWitchM · 13/02/2026 22:13

You’re lucky your store had any left! The event started a few weeks ago and I’ve been to 3 stores near me to get more for my project but none had any yarn left - maybe I live in a place with lots of knitters

Ilikeyoursleeves · 13/02/2026 22:58

I am a newbie, does saying ‘wool’ mean it’s actually wool?? 🧐😳 I used that word to just describe what looks like wool! I’ve just read the label and it’s 100% acrylic. Should I be calling it yarn??

I also didn’t realise this event has been on for a few weeks now, I’ve only just started knitting though so wasn’t on the look out before!

@TheKatzKlaws hello again! I’d recommend the Sophie scarf or shawl as it’s beginner friendly and looks a bit different to a standard scarf. I googled it and found a pattern and YouTube has loads of videos

These will 100% be sold it my local then... I'll still give it a try though.

I think the Sophie shawl is what I'm going to try, I've found a couple of patterns on Ravelry with videos.

Fingalscave · 14/02/2026 07:58

OP have you joined Ravelry? There are lots of free patterns on there. Some yarn manufacturers also have free patterns on their websites- Stylecraft do.

Ilikeyoursleeves · 14/02/2026 08:38

I recently joined but I’ve not had a look yet, I’ll check that out thanks

Yes @Ilikeyoursleeves yarn is correct and can refer to wool, silk, cotton, acrylic. I think buying acrylic is great idea for learning, good luck with your cardigan!

There were some bargains to be had in Hobbycraft yesterday. I picked up a 50g ball of big merino, a 50g ball of 100% wool Aran weight and 10 50g balls of sirdar snuggly for a total of £8.50!!!

Rainbowsayhi · 14/02/2026 22:41

I couldn't find any in our 2 stores.
I will visit Hobbycraft tomorrow. Thanks @Jins.
