Best paint for wooden crafts?

hi all. what is the best paint for wood? acrylic keeps coming up on Google, but I thought I'd ask here if anyone has any specific recommendations? and do I need to seal or varnish it? just making little keepsakes out of wood.

also PVA glue has come up when I've asked about glue, would you recommend this too?

Wood glue is pva but slightly different from school glue type pva so you don't have to clamp it for as long.
