Do children still like Arts and Crafts?

My mom recently asked me to buy a gift for my sister (aged 8) to take to her friend’s birthday party. When I was a child, I used to like arts and crafts and really enjoyed any gifts that had me painting, glueing, coloring, or making bracelets. I wasn’t sure if these new Gen Alpha iPad kids nowadays still like those? I asked my sister but she kept saying to get her candy which I dont think is a good idea.

In general they LOVE them.
Making bead bracelets is hugely popular and I have never met a child who doesn't love a new set of fancy colouring pens.

Can't speak for any other kids but I look after my DGC 8 and 5 in the school holidays quite often and I always have pens, paper, glue, scissors etc available which they make good use of. I think the only caveat would be whether they have an adult in their lives who would do it with them/facilitate it if they would need help or if it is particularly messy.

Some do , some don’t bit like any other pastime

Morepositivemum · 24/01/2026 16:02

Mostly yes, they may need to be forced to sit down to it but then most will love it!!

There are definitely children these days who give up on toys and arts and crafts from a (to me) surprisingly young age. But it's not typical. Acrylic pens are a good shout, as are bead selections (I'd avoid a bracelet making kit though, as the quality is often poor).

How old are you OP? You have an 8 year old sibling but you are coming across as someone several generations older.

I have an 8 year old. Arts and Crafts are still popular- I'd recommend a Hey Clauy or similar clay modelling kit, magic colour changing pens or a large pack of felt tips for the most coveted items we've had. As a mum bead making jewelry kits make my heart sink as those tiny pieces get everywhere on making and again when the jewelry breaks ... as done anything like a rock painting kit which won't wash off anything it touches including skin clothes or floor...

Many children love arts and crafts some don't just as some don't love sports. But I think an art or craft kit is a much nicer birthday present than sweets. And you don't have to worry about allergy's, or whether they are allowed sweets

My niece does (my nephew is a bit young for it yet). Certain family members got barred from ever buying her craft things after again, after buying huge buckets of endless craft supplies that left glitter in the carpet forevermore! I was also asked to never take her to The Range again, after I sent her home with a huge haul of arts and crafts supplies... but we have spent hours painting, drawing and sewing. It was also handy, because nobody else would think to buy her a 'sew your own llama' kit for Christmas😁

minipie · 31/01/2026 10:37

IME

Yes at 8 still into craft

At 9 still keen if it’s the right sort - Clay beads yes, fancy glitter pens yes, 3D pen yes. Boxed “make your own” sets not so much.

By 10/11 unfortunately crafts seem to have been mostly ditched in favour of bloody Jellycats, Zoomerang and skincare 🙄🙄🙄

Hallywally · 31/01/2026 10:38

Yes- my 9 year is obsessed and uses her iPad to help her create stuff by watching/following videos on YouTube etc.

My DD13 loves craft and always has. My DS10 hates it and always has. i think it’s very child dependant
