22 month old drawing faces

Hey all, my daugther has been drawing intentional faces the last couple weeks, she's almost 22 months. She'll say "eyes" and then draw what looks like eyes, hair, nose and so on. These are two of her recent images. I'm pretty amazed that she can do this, is this normal?

One image is with markers, the other is paint (she was painting mommy). Shes done it at least 10 times that I've witnessed, like full faces so I don't think it's a fluke anymore.

That is cool, my 2.4 year old couldn't Do that though he has no interest in arts and crafts yet unfortunately as I love them 😆

lovely but perfectly normal

@Imisscoffee2021 it's so interesting how different they all are. She's been drawing lines since a little after one and we color everyday multiple times a day. She loves it, but yeah I can't tell if I'm just a proud mama or if it's actually impressive.

They all do things at different paces, and it doesn’t really mean much in the long term.

It’s lovely that she’s enjoying it.

I remember hearing my eldest saying hello to her drawing and she'd drawn a face at about 21 months, I was convinced she was a genius of the highest order but checked and it was well within the surprisingly wide range of normal for this skill. She's not even arty now! She is bright and has one other outlying skill but not drawing.

I think it unusual that your child is combining colours with purpose and design though.

DD2 was making clearly representational drawings from a young age. She's going to do an art foundation course next year. The love of drawing has stayed with her 😁

My DS is a similar age and he has understanding of face features and will point to his drawings and say eye, nose for example. They are similar to your DDs pictures in that if you know what it is supposed to be it’s fairly obvious but you wouldn’t really tell if it were just presented to you with no explanation. I think it’s pretty normal for age 2.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 28/11/2025 22:10

That's cool!!
they look very "displayable"
My 22m cant do that at all!
And my 3 yr old is known to produce a few art horrors tbh...

They are aesthetically nice but (not in a harsh way) i dont think its 'a sign' or anything... having 2 now i see how totally different "normal" can look...
Eg. My youngest could sing whole songs at 13m and barely walk, my oldest was climbing builders ladders for fun at that age and still calling dh mama at 2 yrs...🫠

Not meaning to be a dick but i don't see any faces there. Looks like perfectly normal 2 year old drawings to me - squiggles.

Nosleepforthismum · 28/11/2025 22:14

I’m excited for you OP! It’s awesome. My 2.5 year old DD is only interested in scribbling as hard as she can and 4 year old DS comes back with lots of drawings of “swamps” in one block colour.

MyOtherProfile · 29/11/2025 12:36

That's lovely. You can see her intention. That's good for her age.

Mydonkeyisred · 11/01/2026 15:43

I think at this age they all have different abilities my ds drawed this picture when he was 2.5 years old.
