Pyrography (wood burning)

Does anyone do this? I have been given a kit, which I asked for, after I enjoyed doing a pyrography workshop on holiday. Now I have the kit I’m stumped as to what to try first! I did two cheese boards at the workshop.

I think I’d like to try some Christmas-themed items first like tree decorations or a Christmas Eve box for DS maybe. Just looking for ideas on where to start if anyone has any please.

Hi. I do! It’s a great hobby. There are some fabulous artists on facebook and Pinterest is good for design ideas. Breadboards, cheeseboards, bookmarks, keepsake boxes are all good ideas. I buy boxes of a4 birch plywood sheets from Amazon and burn on them for practice. To find items to burn on, you need completely unfinished items. Try searching for pyrography blanks or wood burning blanks. You can obviously burn on most wood types (but not all - do research) but never burn on mdf or anything with any wax or varnish on it and make sure your burning area is well ventilated. Some wood is more friendly than others. Something like mahogany or oak is probably better left for more experienced burners.

Have a great time, and don’t expect too much at first. It’s like anything else, to get good you have to put in the practice.

Hi Op, I bought a Hobbycraft Pyrography tool and went on to make Christmas Eve boxes for my kids using this tutorial https://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/ideas/how-to-make-a-pyrography-christmas-eve-box.html

They turned out really well! Everyone has asked where I bought them from! I’ve also made a hot tub sign and I’m quite proud of it.

I enjoy it but found I get back wrist ache so have to do it in short bursts.
