Quilting with Silk

I am wondering if anyone here has done much quilting using silk?

I've been told that Dupion is the best as its less likely to pull and move but I quite like the look of slanty squares of silk and an irregular overall pattern.

Should I be using a fixer on the regular silk or can I just go ahead and use it?

Advice gratefully received.

How do I do that then?

Stick a message in chat saying "Moondog I need your help" in the title then link to this thread.

Dupion would be best because it's not as slippy (that's the one with the slubs in, wild silk it's sometimes called). I think it could look fab but I think it's quite difficult to sew with!

Yes I've done it, though I'm a random/slapdash quilter not a careful and exact one. I have used Dupion - I wash it first, so that I can wash the whole quilt after without the dye running or the pieces shrinking. However that does change the texture, from shiny to a kind of nubbly soft surface (which I really like). If you wanted to keep it shiny, you'd have to dry-clean the quilt.

I do actually use any silk fabric though - if it's very light I use a double layer for each piece, or cut the piece in silk and also a support piece in thicker cotton, put the silk on top and sew as one piece. I have a quilt that has some very light silk crepe pieces in and did that double layer thing and it's fine, hasn't pulled at all (and that quilt gets a lot of use).

Not sure what a fixer is.
