Has anyone made a temperature blanket?

I'd like to try a temperature blanket but don't want to end up with some huge, unwieldy thing. I've seen so many pictures on line of behemoth blankets with a row per day or 2 rows for maximum/minimum temps.

Has anyone made a smallish (say lap quilt sized) blanket, and what pattern did you use?

No. I'm put off by how huge they are. If you even just do one row a day that's 365 rows. I know by day 12 I would already be a week behind!

ShesTheAlbatross · 13/07/2025 22:02

I did! It’s on my DD’s bed. I did one row a day (with the max temp) so it’s not massive.

I did get a bit behind, but I kept track of the temps on each date (and websites can tell you historically if you forget to check) so it wasn’t too hard to catch up.

MadisonAvenue · 13/07/2025 22:03

I’ve made several. It depends on which stitch you use as to how long they end up.

Maybe do one where you use weekly temperatures and do three rows per week - the lowest, highest and the average temps.

I seen someone do a scarf instead, it was actually really cute x

MostlyGrannySquares · 13/07/2025 22:22

I did one with crocheted interlocked rings for each day so it wasn't too big. It's bigger than a lap blanket though. You could take average temps for fewer rows?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/07/2025 22:24

How are you going to make it? Knitting/crochet/quilting? If crochet you could do a small granny square per day with min temp for inner and max temp for outside.

I thought about doing one a few years ago but what put me off was how undifferentiated the weather is in Ireland, the particular year that I was considering started with a very warm winter.

Nagginthenag · 13/07/2025 22:50

Thank you for lots of ideas. BlackAmericano, I'm planning on crochet. I've seen the granny square ones, perhaps with a 3mm hook. The nicest ones have a border round each square which looks nice, but obvs increases the size.
Mostlygrannysquares, I don’t suppose you'd be willing to post a pic of your blanket?
Dontcomeatme, I'd thought about a scarf but had visions of Tom Baker 😁
MadisonAvenue, I hadn't thought about weekly - that would certainly reduce the size.
Shesthealbatross, I found temps on Accuweather so even (when) I get behind I've still got a record.
Myotherprofile, it wad the thought of 365 rows that was putting me off!

I'm making one! I'm enjoying it but I'm a bit behind as crocheting during a heatwave doesn't appeal. I know I'll catch up though, I quite like doing several rows rather than one row a day. It's quite fun planning it I chose the colours with my son and he tracks the temperature for me.

Nagginthenag · 14/07/2025 07:04

How many colours are you using? I've earmarked 15, so one for every 3® or thereabouts.

I did this one in 2023. It was only 3 rounds per square (I think). I used join as you go so no sewing up. I joined it diagonally rather than in rows. And of course June has 31 days for some reason...

Oh and my DD made temperature snakes which was fun!

I don’t think I took a picture of the completed blanket but I’ve got some in progress and the colours I used - I added a row inbetween each month but if you omitted it, the blanket would be even more compact. I used this pattern mcrochetm-blogspot-com.translate.goog/2015/03/blog-post.html?m=1&_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en

I love those interlocking rings @MostlyGrannySquares

Nagginthenag · 14/07/2025 13:32

Oh, these are all really great, and very different to what I was thinking of doing. Will investigate further.

I was once in a Facebook group about temperature blankets - such variety! Worth joining if you're on Facebook - research is easy on there!
