Craft Room

I have moved from a small bedroom into a room twice the size. Initially I thought 'great', however with the room I inherited a comfy chair and a smart TV fixed on the wall. A few weeks in and my productivity has dipped! I am spending more time in the craft room with a cat on my knee watching TV in the comfy chair .Are these things compatible with a craft room or should I get rid of TV at least ( definitely not the cat😸).

What sort of crafts do you do? I watch TV while making quilts but would be more likely to listen to the radio when dress making or doing more complex projects. Cats are obviously an essential component of the creative environment. (One of mine goes from slumbering tea-cosy into full Quixotic battle mode just as I’m ready to cut out pieces for a dress pattern. They are all experts in assessing the comfort levels of quilts at each stage of the process)

I do several. Knit, crochet, embroidery and rug making. I have good intentions, sit down , pop TV/ you tube on and before you know it an hour has passed! I think I may experiment by removing the chair first, and this will force me to sit in a chair at my table and be crafty!

Put a small table next to comfy chair for your supplies to be within reach. I like to watch a box set when I’m hand sewing. If using the machine I prefer a podcast or audio book. Just bought Bluetooth noise-cancelling headphones which are great as I can move around freely between machine, iron, cutting table etc.

The comfy chair could be good for knitting? I have a Victorian nursing chair (low arms) which is good for knitting as you have freedom of manoeuvre. I don’t get to sit in it often as it’s also the perfect size for cats to curl up and sleep in. Nevertheless I’m planning to put it by the window in my bedroom when I redecorate so that I can sit and knit while looking out of the window -and hiding from the children-

I refuse to worry if I don't feel like doing anything - it's a HOBBY not a summons.

I have a squishy sofa and big telly in here - I have things positioned so I can sit and watch TV when at the sewing machine, and I tend to work through watching TV series while doing something - but if I just want to flop on the sofa and be mindless I don't worry about it.

However I did intentionally re-design this room this month so I have my WFH desk (not set up for TV watching) then crafting space but also it as a second sitting room all in this one room and it IS a space that brings me joy - I've got French doors onto the decking so I can wander out there and have a cuppa in the sun, I've got stained glass panes at the top of the French doors so there are little spots of colour that pop up around the room and I'm quite fond of sitting on the sofa by the garden just not being productive at all.

It sounds a wonderful combination. Change nothing. Except perhaps the position of your work table/box relative to the comfy chair and TV, so that you can have a project to hand whenever you sit down to watch something or are incapussytated.

Alternatively - do not sit in the comfy chair unless you deliberately choose not to craft.

“Incapussytated” 😁
