Fixing the fit - vest top sewing

Hi crafty folks! Can anyone help me with this, as I'm clueless.

I've been trying to make a simple vest top out of jersey. On first attempt, it was a bit baggy under the arms (red circles), so I took on the top of the side seams. This helped a bit, but then it was almost gaping slightly at the front of the arm holes (blue arrows). I got that basically looking OK with a couple of darts, but I'm sure you shouldn't need darts in a vest top! I don't think it's an issue of stretching the fabric out of shape, although it could be. I did everything with with zigzag or overlocker... I'm not sure what it "means"... maybe it's too tight across the actual bust line?! Does anyone have any insight what i might be doing wrong? (I'm attaching an image, no idea how quick they are to load).

Many thanks!

Maybe when you took in the side seams you should have shortened the straps by taking in the shoulder seams?
I am obviously only guessing

Vest patterns usually have darts at the bustline.
I've never made one.

Hmm, maybe, although it only seems ill fitting at the front... aside from using darts, I don't know how to shorten only the front 😁

Umm, I'm not sure that's true in patterns designed for stretch jersey... I have 3 patterns (only attempted one) for similar styles and none have darts - and I've never bought a jersey vest with bust darts...?
