Camp blanket - help please!

I'm (hopefully!) making camp blankets for my kids for Christmas. I've got some ex-army wool blankets as that seemed to be the best in terms of longevity and fire retardance. However, of course they are quite itchy so I was wondering about adding a lining. The blanket would always go over clothes or bedding though so not sure it's necessary. Also wondering what type of thread is best to add blanket stitch around the edges? Can I use wool for this? I'm going to try to do poncho style with a front pocket but although I am a competent sewer, this is the first proper project I have done in a long time so I'm not feeling hugely confident! Any hints and tips would be exceptionally gratefully received! Or if anyone wants to share pics of their successful camp blankets!

I think wool for the blanket stitch is fine. Or any yarn really - I used a cotton yarn to edge a human sized dog bad last Christmas. For example. The good thing about using yarn is that it's relatively cheap and comes in lots of colours. The other option would be embroidery thread but that's not cost effective on a large item like a blanket!

I used an ancient itchy blanket for my camp blanket back in the day, it was cream, not very practical! But that was what Mum found, then I edged it in bright red wool blanket stich, and I put my badges over the moth holes!

Still have it, happy memories.

What a wonderful gift. Hope they turn out just as you want them and you enjoy the make.

Thanks so much to you both for your replies, feeling more confident already and off to get some supplies this afternoon!
