Best sewing machine for 9yo beginner?

DC is 9yo and enjoys arts and crafts, and has just got into sewing and has had a few tries of a friend’s sewing machine. I’m wondering whether a sewing machine would be a good Christmas or 10th birthday present, and what type of machine would be good? I read in a DK book (‘my first sewing machine book’ I think was the title) not to bother buying a toy sewing machine but I’m not sure what to go for as there seem to be loads of different sizes (and prices) and I have no experience in this field myself.
TIA for advice.

I would advise going to have a look in a local shop or somewhere like Hobbycraft that has a range of machines on display. At her age I would agree dont buy a childs machine as she will be outgrowing quickly, by the same token dont get a machine which is very basic for the same reason. look for one that does several stitches so there is lots to experiment with,

I would go with a basic janome - excellent quality for the money and will see her through many years of sewing. I believe John Lewis does a basic machine under their brand which is made by Janome. I have a lower end model and it is pretty robust, fairly straightforward to operate, but with enough functionality to see me through most projects. My 8yo uses mine and it is fairly intuitive.

A JL110 from John Lewis would be perfect. They come in lots of colours and are as mentioned by PP above. It's my first machine and so simple to learn with YouTube videos, perfect for kids and adults. I can do loads on mine now.

I agree with the others. I have a similar machine to the John Lewis one mentioned above and I have had it for over 20 years and can make most stuff I would want to on it. It is also very easy to use.

Go full size and simple, I'd recommend this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brother-LS14S-Chassis-Sewing-Machine/dp/B07B6KL7VZ

I have the JL110 , it is a really good basic machine.

If the JL110 is outside your budget John Lewis has a basic Brother in the sale which is a good brand

I've got a Janome 2200xt which is excellent for my basic sewing needs. I'll never be an expert seamstress but I enjoy making tissue holders, gift bags, scrunchies and other easy projects that pique my interest on Facebook and Youtube.

That John Lewis link is the same as my machine but mine is white and light green.

We bought the Brother one for my daughter’s 10th birthday and it’s been very good. She’s had some kids’ lessons at local craft shop and made all sorts - cushion, pencil case, tote bag etc
