Equivalent to sports weight yarn

Ive found a really nice online pattern for a chevron blanket, but it’s American - it’s specifying “sports weight” yarn . I can see it’s between DK and 4 ply. Can anyone suggest which would be the better weight to use as a substitute? It’s a blanket so the end dimensions aren’t crucial but I’d like it to be roughly the same size .

I'd use DK much more choice of yarns and colours and probably cheaper too as it's more readily available. You could drop a hook or needle size if it's coming out a bit big. I often crochet Dk with a 3.5 or 3.75 instead of 4

I agree with this 😊

Sports is 5ply - do you have that in Britain?

I'd also go for a thinnish 8ply, mostly because I don't care for 4ply and would go bonkers trying to do something the size of a blanket in it.

(ETA just belatedly noticed how old this thread is - sorry! Hope you found good yarn, OP.)
