Help needed understanding knitting pattern

I have an old pattern, I believe it to be American. I am just struggling with this bit.

Armhole shaping: cont in st st and bind off 1 stitch at beginning of every row 4 times on each side. You should now have x stitches left.

Is this bind off 1 stich for 8 rows or bind off 4 stitches on next two rows?

I would say 1 stitch for 8 rows so you get a gradual reduction and a smooth shape. You'd get a step if you lost too many stitches over just two rows.

I agree with @menopausalmare . One stitch at the beginning of the next 8 rows.
