How to clean a ball of wool

I have a ball of wool lying around and managed to spill something on the wool! No clue what it is. It is only a small bit of the wool. Would I just soak? If so, what would I use

Slip the band off, put it in the toe of a pair of tights, twist the tights and fold the leg back into itself to keep it in place and you can wash it in the machine.

What sort of wool is it? Unless it is superwash, don't put it in the washing machine!

If its sheep's wool (not acrylic yarn) you can use the wool wash setting, or a cold rinse.

I've washed balls of acrylic in the washing machine in those mesh bags you get for bras
