Has anyone done a crochet hexagon blanket?

I would love to see your patterns/ideas. I've watching you tube videos and saw a lovely starburst hexagon thing to try.

I have lots of scrap wool, and thought this would be a fun alternative to granny squares..

Yes, I've made a few. My favourite is the happy little tree blanket by cypress textiles. It's designed for 10g balls of yarn so ideal for leftovers.

The scrappy one is one I made over several years, using up masses of scraps. I just made hexagons using up leftovers at the ends of projects. The fourth rows are join-as-you-go using yet more leftovers. The photo isn't good - the colours are actually much more vibrant, lots of purple and jewel colours.

My current project is much simpler and smaller. Whereas the first one was completely random, this one is inspired by the patchwork quilting design called Grandmother's Flower Garden. I joined the hexies using slipstitch, picking up only one loop on either side so that the seam lies almost flat. The darker green is a fleece backing which I will fold over the edge to form a binding. I've just got to decide whether to redo the edge hexies - they really ought all to be either halves or wholes. OTOH does it matter if the binding goes over them? I've plenty of time to think about it, as it's far too warm right now to have the whole blanket on my lap while I work on it.

That is rather lovely.

I do like the idea of a Relaxaghan!

If you want a change from squares and have lots of scraps the Mystic Lanterns blanket is good

That's gorgeous @alloutofcareunits

Where did you get your pattern please?

I have a very old hexie blanket made by my husband's late grandmother. When they were hiding in the bomb shelters at night during WWII she crocheted hexies to keep her mind off what could be happening. At the end of the war she joined them all, backed them and .... put the blanket away. I found it in my late MIL's house when we were clearing it out. Some of the stitches are dying and I think the moth has been busy here and there but I've seen something online on how to mend old crochet blankets. I want to save it but lack faith in my abilities.

www.janiecrow.com/mystical-lanterns-blanket.

I think I downloaded the pattern from Ravelry but the Janiecrow site above had the 1/2 lantern pattern I used for the sides and top/bottom
Lovely story about your family blanket, hope you can restore it

Thanks all - beautiful blankets and inspiration here.

Love the lanterns one too.

I'm tempted by the lanterns, but they look like like they might need focus. Can you get into the same mindful (mindless?) rhythm with them as you do with hexes and granny squares?

alloutofcareunits · 07/07/2024 17:53

@Dilbertian definitely! They're really easy once you've done a few, very relaxing ☺️

Thank you! Pattern found and bought. Although given I'm on row 2 of a big blanket at the moment it might be a while before I get to it 😂

@FlipFlops4Me I really enjoyed doing it, crochet is very relaxing. I've done Moroccan Tiles and Frida's Flowers, they might also be on the same site

I just made this as a baby blanket. It was supposed to be a triangle shawl from West Yorkshire Spinners Eternal wool pattern but i changed the shape. it is hexagonal which you join together as you go along.
