I need to knit a teddy!

I am a slow but steady knitter, have even managed to produce a half decent cable after half a bottle of wine, and I can follow a pattern as long as it's not REALLY complicated. I'd like to knit a small teddy for my friend's new baby, has anyone got any patterns that a confident beginner type of knitter could manage? I've had a look on Google but keep finding a scary looking phrase that says "knit in the round" EEEEK! Can anyone help?!! (or translate the "in the round" instruction!)

thanks in advance wise mumsnetters!

I knit a Debbie Bliss one for DS before he was born and he loves it. It was simple stitched with a lot of increasing and decreasing. I'll try an dfind a link to the book.

Here. There's a picture of the teddy too

There's no 'knitting in the round' (which means knitting on a circular needle), it's all flat.

Just realised it doesn't tell you the name of the book there. It's "Debbie Bliss Simply Baby"

ooh that's a gorgeous teddy PuppyDogTails, thank you! I went to look at it though, and can't see anywhere to purchase the pattern, only the wool seems to be for sale. Am I being really dim?

No, you're right, they sell it here though

ah, that explains it! I'll go and see if I can find the book, thanks ever so much!

There is a nice easy one in Erika Knights Simple Knits for Cherished babies. A photo here I think www.colourway.co.uk/simple/simple.htm. There are corrections though, so check the Erika Knight website.

There is an almost 'must have' teddy in the March issue of Simply Knitting, p 33

there's one in debbie bliss's toy knits which is all inc and dec.

(my picture chosen by ravelry to illustrate the pattern)

(what a showoff I am)

(shows off anyway)

Not that it's actually any help to you, but I just thought I'd show you the original RustyBear, which my mum knitted for me to take to school on my first day 45 years ago. He's only about 3 inches tall, but he's survived a hot wash in my pocket & moth attack!
