Baby blanket crochet pattern

I want to make a blanket for DD's firstborn, due later this year. I want it to be special but practical. Can anyone recommend any patterns?

I have done the Call the Midwife blanket which is simple but lovely. Will see if I can find a link.

This is a nice simple design:

Yarn choice is the most important thing. The blanket will get used more if it's easy to care for, so look for washable yarns and yarns aimed at being used for baby stuff.

I'm currently doing a 6 day star blanket for a friend's baby using james brett baby marble yarn. It's not the softest but machine washable so I'm hoping it'll soften after a wash.

Have a look at OwlBHooked on Etsy. They’re really easy to do but look so beautiful once finished. I’ve done almost all of them for DGS and friends’ babies.

I love finer yarns - Scheepjes Whirls - which i usually turn into 12 point star blankets. I will often buy a coordinating Scheepjes Whirlette to extend it a little
more!
