Knitting Help Please.... Have I ruined this project??

hello knitters! i'm making a 'hooded carrying bag' out of debbie bliss' latest baby book (essential baby) and i think i've made a major mistake. i used 5mm needles because that's what the yarn calls for (i've used the yarn before) instead of 4.5mm needles which is what the pattern calls for. of course i never did a tension check and now i'm almost done the back piece (for me a LOT of work to get to this point) and i've realised that it's not even close.

i'm not worried about the whole thing being bigger than it should be - i think that just means it will fit longer! - but i'm worried that it was specifically supposed to be knit more tightly for the baby's sake, i.e. toes getting caught in the holes or something??

do you think this matters or do you think i can just carry on and have it a bit bigger and looser than the pattern??

thanks!!!

I really don't think it will matter dylansmum - if you are using the correct needles for the yarn then it won't knit with big gaps in.

Not familiar with the pattern but I guess there aren't a lot of seams/pieces to attach etc therefore I'm sure it will be fine! I never make swatches - but the only time a project went disastrously wrong, guess what, I had swatched first - so I have no faith in swatching anyway

hmmm i think you're right pruners because it's all knit in one big piece, first the back (48cms long) then the sleeves are added as additional sts cast on each side, then you split and do the front iyswim. the hood is the only separate piece that's then attached. for that reason it's pretty heavy already so it's maybe to support the weight of it??

miaou it doesn't have gaps and i tend to be quite a tight knitter anyway but as i'm getting better at knitting i'm also getting looser!

definitely reminded me that i need to check my patterns more closely before i start... the preg-brain doesn't help i'm so scattered sometimes!
