Does anyone kindly fancy having a go at this bit of crochet so I can see where I am going wrong? I can’t for the life of me figure out what’s going on, I’m wondering if they’ve forgotten to write a turn in, or have got a round number wrong at some point. I can’t get past round 2!

It’s to make the scales of this fish.

Thank you!

Is there a chart for the scales? I can see there's a chart for the main square in the fish photo.

I don't think there's a turn because of where you have to DC into the 3rd chain from the start of R1

Round 3 makes no sense at all.

Yes that’s right

Ah thanks all for answering. There is a chart! Duh I didn’t even think of that as I never look at them. Hopefully will provide answers, I’ll have another go tomorrow.

It’s a sweet book but have noticed a fair few typos!

So, Round 1 and 2 are shown on chart 1 - they are more like a single round really. chart 2 is simply confusing 😂

Crikey, it's like one of those cheap Chinese Lego model rip off instructions.

I think I've worked it out.

Round 1 makes one scale
Round 2 makes the framework to put the next row of two scales onto.
Round 3 makes 2 scales.

i guess the next rows are similar, adding the framework and then the next row of scales.

Have you made the fish yet? I'd look at the picture for positioning of the scale, and just work each scale into the fish.

No idea with the fish but @Scampuss what is that blanket? I love it! Is it attic 24? Which colour?

i've made scales like this for a crochet pangolin. but after a while, I ignored the charts / instructions and worked out my own hack that looked about right. I'm not very precise at crochet.

anyway, my strategy is

  1. get the ring in the middle of the scale (2 chain stitches)
  2. make the main scale - triple crochet stitch in the arch around the top of the ring with one chain stitch in the middle to let it turn
  3. fit in 3 or 4 regular dc stitches along the flat side of the scale to get back to the starting point and make things neat.
from the point you end at (3), you then make a new ring to do the next scale.

I think I'd ditch the instructions and just go for "crocodile stitch"

The book was from The Works so that’s fair 😂

Hi, also bear in mind this is US terminology i.e. DC is actually a treble not a double. You can tell from the stitch symbol in the chart.

I’ve done it! Your annotations were very helpful @SoupDragon , thank you. He’s kinda ugly but I don’t like not being able to do stuff so I am satisfied now 😄
