growing your own vegetables

hi all

i went to Tesco yesterday and bought this greatlooking magazine (oddly the people who make it call it a bookazine!) it's called "growing vegetables is fun" and is a guide to growing your own veg, but it's aimed specifically at kids and written in simple english. There were some other gardening mags with free seeds there but they seemed to be more adulty.

Anyway "growing vegetables is fun" comes with 10 free packs of seeds in the bag. I hadnt plannedanything for this easter weekend due so this is going to be a lovely way to spend some time with my 2 girls, and it seems quite a topical thing at the mo. Has anyone tried growing their own veg at home - and got any tips?

Alex

We grew potatoes,(good) tomatoes(bad, they got blight), carrots , yellow, round and normal ( good , but the kids pulled them up and ate them before they reached the plate),
oinions ( bad), rocket (too good spread like wild fire and we had far too much).. anyway all great fun and we are doing it again this year with more things and a bigger bit of land!

This years crops are to be.. potatoes, cabbage, runners, peas, beetroot. we have an apple tree going in and a plum, stawberries, raspberries, tomatoes and different lettuce types.

Not an expert here at all.. last year we just threw the seeds in an watched what came up.. but this year I have a BOOK!!! LOL
All my kids loved it and are looking forward this years crops!. ( lets see if the carrots get to the plate this time).

yes, we grew all our own veg last year and we are still eating it. It is very satisfying work but weeding can be a major pain!
try the garadening section too

garadening I meant gardening

good stuff - I'm going to start first thing tomorrow!
I'm just flicking through this "growing vegetables is fun" magazine and it's really quite good. There's a bit in the middle for kids to colour in and draw pictures and even stick their photos. I think it should keep the girls busy for quite some time.

There's a bit on compostimg too - it looks a bit mucky, but I'm sure the girls will love that.
