Gold leaf on wallpaper

I'm not in the least bit arty or crafty so am looking for advice.
I'm about to redecorate a room but can't find the right wallpaper - I want something with a bit of detail,with the right pattern and in the right colour.
I found a wallpaper I quite like but it's a bit boring so I was wondering about buying some coloured gold leaf sheets to add to some of the details on the walllaper.
Is this doable?
Is it straight forward?
Can a novice like me achieve a good finish?
Any advice/tips would be appreciated!

Could you just ask for a sample of the wallpaper and give it a go?

I've never used the sheets but have used gilding flakes, which is kind of similar stuff but in much smaller pieces. The main issue is the bits go everywhere, they're lighter than light. So I think if you were trying to apply the leaf when the wallpaper is actually on the wall you might find it a bit messy!

I don't have any wallpaper handy or else I'd try my gilding flakes and let you know the results.
